The Printmaking department area consists of three spacious adjoining studios: lithography, etching/monotype/woodcut, and silkscreen. Additionally there are four smaller rooms in the space: a computer lab and technician office, stone graining room, photomechanical room and acid room. The book-arts, relief and papermaking classes are held in an adjacent studio. All of the studios offer natural lighting and state-of-the-art ventilation systems. Individual workspaces are available for advanced and graduate level printmakers.
The lithography studio has 5 presses, the largest being a Charles Brand with a 38″ x 50″ press bed and a 44″ x 124″ Rutherford offset proofing press for students who desire to work in a larger format. The stone graining room holds an extensive selections of litho stones with over 100 stones ranging in sizes from 9″ x 11″ to 48″ x 36″, several of which are high quality gray and blue coloration. Included in this space is a large graining sink along with a Big Joe hydraulic lift.
The etching lab offers equipment and supplies for monotype, intaglio and woodcut processes. Students have accessibility to three etching presses, the largest having a press bed size of 36″ x 60″, and two brand new Takach monotype presses. An adjoining acid room contains the acid baths and rosin box.
The silkscreen studio consists of multiple tables for printing and individual workspaces. For students incorporating photographic processes in their work, the screen-printing area has a large bordering photomechanical room that contains 2 exposure units, along with a wash out booth.
A computer lab is also situated within the department, providing high quality Epson print capabilities for those who are interested in exploring digital printmaking. The diversity of equipment and facilities allows for a blending of traditional with contemporary print methodologies.
Students wishing to explore artist books and papermaking will not have to wander too far. A neighboring room contain a 1000 square foot book-arts, relief, and papermaking studio. The room contains 2 Vandercook letterpresses, 2 large paper presses, and a large collection of type fonts.
