Sculpture

One of the strengths of the sculpture program is its ability to adapt and expand the facilities to accommodate the needs and interests of the current students. Presently, the department is building a large plastics vacu-form machine and acquiring a mill to compliment our metal lathe. Advances continue in computer based technologies that support video, web-based work and CAD. Students employ an industrial sewing machine and have access to space dedicated to work with resins and fiberglass as well as various mold making technologies. Other sculpture facilities include a fully equipped woodshop, a large metal fabrication shop and foundry. We actively pour bronze and aluminum and pour iron on a semi annual basis. The steel room/fabrication area has an overhead, 5-ton crane and 5-ton fork lift. This shop includes MIG and TIG welders as well as a variety of cutting, bending, and rolling equipment, drill presses, bench grinders and sanders, and a punch, press and break. There is also a tool room that is outfitted with a wide variety of hand and small power and pneumatic tools.

Sophomore students utilize a large common space dedicated to their classes that compliments their use of the other active shops. Juniors and seniors have individual work spaces. All sculpture students have monitored access to the shops at night and on the weekends. There is a dedicated room for wax and plaster, a computer lab and a large gallery/critique space that are shared with students studying in the Ceramics program. There are also outdoor and special projects spaces.

Each year, the Sculpture area participates in several public commissions created through partnerships with the community and other IUPUI entities. These projects provide real world experience for our students working with commissioning agencies and local businesses, developing models and maquettes, budgets and timelines. The faculty work closely with all the students as they develop proposals and remain active mentors overseeing projects as they are completed by the selected student/artists.
