How to apply

Because Herron School of Art and Design is a school of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), all Herron applicants must first be admitted to IUPUI.

For an online application to IUPUI and general admission requirements, please visit www.iupui.edu/apply. When asked for the area of study on IUPUI’s application form, students must indicate “Art (Herron Pre-fine Arts)”, “Art History”, “Art Education” or the name of one of Herron’s degree programs.

Once a student has been unconditionally admitted to IUPUI, his/her application will be reviewed by Herron. Admission policies for Herron vary based on whether the student is an incoming freshman, transfer student, applying for readmission, or transferring from another school at IUPUI. Please read the information below to determine how Herron will evaluate your application.

Incoming freshmen

Students who are attending college for the first time are considered incoming freshmen. Once the student has been unconditionally admitted to IUPUI, they will receive direct admission (a portfolio will not be required) to Herron if their cumulative high school g.p.a. was more than a 3.0 on a 4 point scale. If the student does not meet this requirement, he or she will be sent a letter from Herron requesting to see the portfolio for admission consideration.

Transfer students

Students who have graduated from high school and who then enrolled at a college or university and possess credits from that institution are considered transfer students. Once transfer students have been unconditionally admitted to IUPUI, they will receive direct admission to Herron if their cumulative g.p.a. at their previous college or university in over 12 credit hours was more than a 2.5 on a 4 point scale. Transfer students with less than a 2.5 cumulative g.p.a. will be sent a letter from Herron requesting to see their portfolio for admission consideration.

Transfer students may receive credit for successfully completing academic courses (grade of C or higher) of equivalent content from other regionally accredited institutions. Transfer credit for studio art courses, however, is granted only from institutions with National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) accreditation. Credits for studio art courses from institutions not accredited by NASAD may be eligible for evaluation toward a Herron degree program. Transfer students ready to register for 300-level studio courses must submit a portfolio for review. Students who are eligible for advancement will be notified by the Herron Student Services Office after admission to IUPUI. Review dates and guidelines will be determined by the individual degree programs.

Previous Herron or IUPUI students applying for readmission

Students who have previously attended Herron or have received a degree outside of Herron from IUPUI must submit an application to IUPUI if they have not attended school for over a year. If an IUPUI/Herron student has been out of school for less than a year, he or she should contact an academic advisor at Herron to discuss readmission to the school (317) 278-9400. Previous Herron students should receive direct admission to Herron as long as they had not been academically dismissed from the school. Previous IUPUI students who did not pursue a Herron degree are admitted based on the guidelines for students transferring from other IUPUI schools (see below).

Students from other IUPUI schools

Students currently enrolled in another IUPUI school may request a transfer into Herron School of Art and Design. Students must have a minimum of 12 credit hours and a 2.50 or higher cumulative grade point average. Students must complete the Herron Application and return it to the Herron Student Services Office, room 126. Priority application deadlines are October 1 for spring admission and March 1 for summer or fall admission.
