Select 400-500 level courses in studio art and art history; non-art major courses may not be applied. Studio courses below 500 level must be taken in conjunction with the graduate independent research component, C511 Independent Graduate Studio (1-6 credits) Taken concurrently with an undergraduate studio. Requires authorization from the director of student services prior to registration.

Introduction to research in the field and survey of contemporary issues in art education. Examination of research history and philosophy of art education to discover relationships between education to discover relationships between developments in education as a whole and art education. Emphasis on issues that directly affect the education. Emphasis on issues that directly affect the art teacher within the educational system.

Art for Teachers of Exceptional Children
3 credits

Planning and presentation of art lessons and programs for children with a variety of special needs. The program involves presentations by guest professionals and field experiences. Emphasis is on public school application.

Non-studio Approaches to Art Education
3 credits

Exploration of critical approaches to newer media, including digital, film, video, television, and internet directed toward an art context. Emphasis on the development of critical skills and pedagogy related to making meaning of a wide range of contemporary media in the visual culture. Class visits to museums and galleries.

Improving Studio Instruction in Art

Designed to examine major directions in art and the points of view of professional artists in order to develop new approaches to elementary and secondary art instruction.

A variable topic course designed to cover current issues in art curriculum and assessment. Designed for the K-12 art specialist.

This course is reserved for students wishing to pursue independent research within their graduate program. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. Individual study. Credit to be arranged.

Practicum/Thesis in Art Education

Exhibition or educational research thesis for teacher/artist/researchers. Capstone experience in related area of interest for the degree.
