Along the way, you’ll develop a working knowledge of materials and techniques, an understanding of visual principles, and keen powers of observation—all vital to your success as an artist or designer.

As you progress through the first year and gain proficiency in drawing and design, you will be laying the foundation on which you will later build advanced work in the field of your choice. Through self-examination and faculty counseling, you will be able to confidently select your major area of study.

To formally enter a degree program, you must pass a portfolio review after completing the foundation year requirements and 9 credit hours of sophomore-level studio courses. This first year provides you with the time and experiences to decide on a degree program, as well as skills to start you on the journey toward your chosen goal. Much of the success of Herron programs has been due to the strength of the Foundation program and the comprehensive preparation it provides.

For transfer students, the Foundation Program or its equivalent in previously earned credit (as determined by the Admissions Committee and the Foundation Coordinator) is a prerequisite for study in the BFA and the BAE art education degree programs.
