SPECTRUM Diverse Student Artists' Organization

SPECTRUM is a diverse student artists' group whose mission is to offer creative outlets and artistic, collaborative and academic support to the typically underrepresented diverse art students attending Herron School of Art and Design.

SPECTRUM strives to promote multiculturalism, acknowledge the presence of diverse cultures and bring that diversity to the forefront of Herron's art community.

SPECTRUM encourages positive communication and aids in creating a cohesive student body for Herron and the Indianapolis art community at large.

SPECTRUM strives to find avenues to exhibit the artwork of diverse students who attend or have attended Herron School of Art and Design.

SPECTRUM aids in the recruitment and retention of diverse students, widens community outreach and mentors young diverse artists. Spectrum increases peer-to-peer interaction of Herron students, develops workshops and creates lecture series or panel discussions to increase the awareness of diversity in the arts.

SPECTRUM is an extension of The Shared Heritage Scholarship Fund. This scholarship (up to $2500) is awarded annually and aids in expanding the cultural diversity base of Herron's student body. The Shared Heritage Scholarship was established in 1996 in conjunction with the Shared Heritage exhibition at the Indianapolis Museum of Art in recognition of four African American artists, John W. Hardwick, William Majors, William E. Scott and Hale Woodruff. Incoming freshmen or transfer students applying to be full time students to Herron School of Art and Design are eligible for this scholarship. To be considered for renewal, the student must attend full time and maintain a minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA. A portfolio application is required. Students that add to the diversity of Herron are encouraged to apply.
