About

Jason Palamara directs the Machine Musician Lab at IU Indianapolis pursuing multiple AI music and performance initiatives. He is known for a long-term creative partnership with the late technologist/percussionist Scott Deal, with whom he developed the interactive AVATAR software. Dr. Palamara’s new book, Making Machine Musicians; The Complete Guide to AI for Music Performance, is due out in late Spring of 2026 from Routledge. As an instructor, he is the founder/director of IUI’s 30+ member DISEnsemble (Diverse Instrument Symphonic Ensemble), a student group which performs new music on newly developed technology-based instruments. He also teaches Autonomous Music Systems, a course which guides students in the creation of their own interactive musical performance agents and other courses relevant to AI and real-time music systems. You can follow his exploits semi-weekly on YouTube/DISEnsemble.
